Today I drove 295 miles to and from an assignment in South Jersey for New Jersey Monthly. Despite growing up in Central Jersey and living in the Garden State almost all my life, I had never actually BEEN to South Jersey; it’s a long drive that is seemingly endless and, frankly, I never had a reason to go there… until today. Stories I’ve heard over the years made South Jersey out to seem as though it was the “Deep South of the Northeast”, so to speak

On the long drive home, the feeling of the South was definitely present with the wide open roads and endless cornfields. As we drove, my photo assistant and I were thinking of where we could find some lunch and we happened to come across this small roadside BBQ. We immediately decided: “YES. Let’s do it.” We had a chat with T, the namesake of the operation, and soon found ourselves pigging out on some of his offerings: BBQ pulled pork sandwich, pork spare ribs, mac n cheese, and baked beans. Needless to say, it didn’t disappoint. And who knows? Maybe I’ll make another trip down to explore more of what South Jersey has to offer.

Day Boat Scallops, White Bean & Sage Puree, Bean Broth. In the mason jar (!) is a sampling of NJ’s own: River Horse. I believe it’s their Summer Blonde.
Park & Sixth in Jersey City, NJ. Shot for Jersey City Digest. 02.16.12
Sidenote: This dish is part of their “Small Plates Menu”. The owner/chef is one a hell of a guy and a remarkable talent. The flavors and textures he created are out of this world. Every item I’ve ever eaten from him is a 10+/10.
